Can the area around the eyes also be irradiated?
Yes, vitiligo around the eyes can also be irradiated, but special rules apply here. The eyes must be closed and each eye is irradiated for a maximum of 1 minute, precisely because the skin on the eyelids and the surrounding area is thinner and more sensitive to radiation. If a minute is not enough, we gradually add 15 seconds of irradiation until the redness of vitiligo occurs, which persists even the next day.
The area around the eyes affected by vitiligo is called "panda eyes" and is very common among people suffering from this disease. The good news is that the area around the eyes responds very well to treatment.
